Insider Information

Everything you want to know but won’t necessarily be told

  • Free printing in the Psychology Microcomputer Lab (RCB 5201)
  • The department gives MA students $300 and Ph.D. students $400 in support of the research component of your program. Margaret keeps a running tally of your research account. Library copying cards in $20, $30 & $50 allotments can be purchased from Margaret; you may pay in cash, or charge it to your MA/PhD fund. Your student research fund is quite flexible and can be used for the purchase of testing materials, TLC work orders for slide production, poster printing, books or manuals related to your research, library and/or departmental copying, etc. It can’t be used for salaries (paying research assistants) or graduate student travel (handled separately). Use the Departmental resources whenever possible, so you don’t have to front the expenses and wait for reimbursement. For more information contact Bev Davino.
  • As a matter of fact, you should contact Bev Davino if you have family coming in from out of town, or are looking for an excuse to get off the mountain for a weekend. Bev runs a beautiful Bed and Breakfast from her home in Port Moody, a 20 minute drive to and from SFU, or 45 minutes to downtown Vancouver. Check out this link for more information, and a peek at the stunning view from her house.
  • If you are looking for an affordable restaurant experience right on campus, visit the Diamond Alumni Centre (DAC). They have a lunch buffet Tuesdays through Fridays, at only $10.95. Great atmosphere, delicious food, and a scenic view of the mountains!
  • The best value lunch on campus is the Veggie Lunch in Maggie Benson Centre. It’s on three days a week (usually Tuesdays through Thursdays) for $5.
  • The department orders business cards for students upon request.
  • The TSSU will pay for MSP healthcare for yourself as well as spouses and dependents. You can also apply for MSP through the HR department at SFU. For more information check out the Welcome to BC page.

  • The water cooler in the photocopy room (5120) along with the kettle and espresso machine in the main office are open to everyone. There's also a huge tea stash in the main office!
  • For research conferences, printing posters at WMW Repographics off-campus is cheaper than other places, and they offer a very good student rate. Conference posters cost around $45.
  • To help cover the cost of conferences, apply for department and caucus travel awards of up to $500.
  • Did you know your student fees covers the cost of an SFU Recrereation Centre membership all year round? This includes an indoor running track, basketball, badminton and racquet courts, swimming pools and a fitness centre. Head on over to SFU Rec to check out everything they have to offer!
